The seeds of the native Indonesian evergreen nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrant), which yields the popular spices mace and nutmeg spice, are used to make nutmeg. The scarlet, lace-like substance covering the nutmeg seed is mace; this is the interior seed. An important fall spice, nutmeg is often used in fall-flavored drinks and pastries. Additionally, it works nicely in savory recipes like butternut squash soup and complements dishes that call for cream or cheese, such vegetable gratin.
